A recent evoLLLution piece on measuring continuing education's impact reminds us how professional, continuing and online education units bring tremendous value to their universities. Public and private universities are bleeding enrollments, with some tuition-dependent mid-tier privates finding themselves floundering for alternative lines of business. Meanwhile, the PCE/O units on those same campuses are the only units seeing growth and opportunity. However, the challenge for too many of these units is that they struggle to prove their strategic value in ways that move budget conversations.
The evoLLLution piece focuses on a sector-wide measurement gap in Canada, but the same gap has existed for plenty of US university PCE/O units with years of innovative programming and no consistent way to show what that history adds up to. For well-established PCE/O unit, it's beyond time to get aggressive about measuring and articulating impact. Standardize the outcomes data, track it against labor market signals, and put it in front of the BoT before someone else frames the story for us.
